The Colchester Citizens’ Assembly on Housing brought together 50 local residents and University of Essex students across three sessions in February and March 2026. Participants shared their experiences, examined housing challenges and worked together to develop 18 recommendations. A report was shaped that presents proposals on affordable and accessible housing, rental costs and protections, student accommodation, landlord standards, support services and the use of vacant properties.
The recommendations are addressed to Colchester City Council, the University of Essex and the UK Government, while also identifying areas where these institutions could work together. Read the full report to explore the citizens’ proposals for creating fairer, more affordable and more inclusive housing in Colchester.
